Director of Center for Global Health - ISS

Director of the National Center for Global Health of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità since January 1, 2017.

He is President of AIFA since March 2017. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of UNAIDS – Geneva, consultant of the Medicines Patent Pool (UNITAID, WHO, Geneva) and is Vice-President of Friends of Global Fund Europe.

He started his career as a doctor and researcher at the Medical Clinic of the Policlinico Umberto I, La Sapienza Hospital in 1982. In 1993 he won a competition as a Research Manager at the Virology Laboratory of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, where in the first years he was mainly engaged with the HIV/AIDS epidemic, substantially contributing to the discovery of the pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease and to the development of antiretroviral therapy.

In 1988, he was elected President of the International AIDS Society (IAS) and in 2000 brought the great International AIDS Conference in Africa (Durban, South Africa).

From 2003 to 2016 he directed the Department of the Pharmaceutics of the ISS. He has been the coordinator or partner of many European Research projects.

He is the author or co-author of over 300 scientific publications in international journals. He graduated in Medicine in 1977 (University of La Sapienza, Rome) and received specialization in Infectious Diseases in 1982 and in Internal Medicine in 1988. In 1981-1982 he worked at the University of Pennsylvania as a post-doctoral fellow.
